The VED Surface Drive Unit is a robust and reliable drive solution for Progressive Cavity Pumps (PCP). Its primary function is to support and drive the polished rod and sucker rod string, rotating the downhole PCP to lift well fluids to the surface. During shutdown, the integrated anti-reversal device absorbs the reverse torque generated by the rod string unwind and fluid fallback. This effectively prevents the rod connections from backing off, safely dissipates stored energy, and ensures the protection of both equipment and personnel.
Powered by electric motors, the VED Surface Drive Unit can be configured with either a single or dual motor setup, tailored to the specific model of the Progressive Cavity Pump (PCP). The vertically mounted motors transmit power through a belt reduction system. This rotational force is then transferred via the polished rod clamp to the polished rod, driving the rotation of both the sucker rod string and the downhole rotor.
Configurable with one or two motors ranging from 45 to 150 kW, this unit offers a versatile power output that is compatible with the full spectrum of downhole Progressive Cavity Pumps (PCPs) on the market.
Featuring a single-stage belt reduction, the unit delivers high output speeds, making it perfectly suited for high-displacement and high-RPM operations.
The braking system is fully enclosed within the housing and utilizes a wet centrifugal drum brake design. A key feature is that the braking torque increases as rotational speed rises, which effectively prevents rod back-off and eliminates safety hazards during subsequent maintenance operations.
Engineered for high-speed, high-power performance, the unit operates smoothly with minimal noise. Its low maintenance requirements save on manpower and significantly reduce overall operating costs.

By simply matching different motor configurations, this unit is capable of driving the full spectrum of downhole Progressive Cavity Pumps (PCPs) currently available on the market.
High-displacement PCPs generate extremely high reverse torque, which can be challenging for conventional surface drive units to control reliably. The VED-style drum brake system, however, ensures the safe and complete dissipation of all stored torque.
Equipped with a surface-mounted VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) control cabinet, the system offers a wide range of built-in protection features. It also allows for precise and convenient production control by simply adjusting the motor speed via frequency regulation.
The surface equipment mounts directly onto the wellhead, while the PCP is run into the well as part of the tubing and sucker rod string. This streamlined design results in minimal maintenance requirements.
The VED surface drive unit is compatible with downhole progressive cavity pumps (PCPs) from various manufacturers and models. It is widely used in diverse applications, including conventional oilfields and coalbed methane extraction, and adapts seamlessly to various wellhead configurations.
The unit boasts high overall efficiency and features a wet drum braking system. This not only prevents hazards from sucker rod reversal but also eliminates the risk of ignition caused by braking sparks.
